Alright, to be honest, I loved getting back in to my skinny jeans and was happier still when they became loose on me when just half a year earlier I couldn’t get them on past my thighs. At that time I thought it would be impossible to ever wear them again.
When I see overweight women, particularly in their fifties like me and older, I don’t want to help them because I am concerned about what they LOOK like. I want to help them because I know that their weight gain is a WARNING sign of what is going on inside. Insulin resistance is brewing and it is just a matter of time until it manifests into one disease or another.
According to WebMD, “Insulin resistance is when cells in your muscles, fat, and liver don’t respond well to insulin and can’t use glucose from your blood for energy. To make up for it, your pancreas makes more insulin. Over time, your blood sugar levels go up.”
When insulin is high, fat burning stops and fat storage starts. That’s no bueno.
It’s not until you are struggling to bring the blood sugar levels down that medical intervention steps in. During the time that it is building, damage is being done throughout the body – to your memory, nerves, heart – to all of you. Insulin resistance is accelerated when our menses cease and we become more stressed with our hot flashes and sleep disruptions. As I tell my clients, stress + menopause = belly fat.

So while many women will pass over my articles and posts about weight loss because they have accepted their new rounded figure as part of their “positive body image” because that’s what “getting older looks like,” I beg them to realize that it is a silent big red flashing light. 🚨 Red alert! Red alert! Things are malfunctioning inside!
This isn’t the time to shrug your shoulders and say, “Oh well, this is my fate, I guess.” 🤷🏻♀️
