With the New Year, the hopes for a clean slate and a brighter future, weight loss resolutions still remain the most popular ones made. Losing weight as a resolution has sort of become tainted, it feels, like if you make it your resolution, you’re likely to fail.
You’ve seen lots of ads and posts and promises of losing weight this month, since this is considered the “busy” season of the year. As a health coach who helps menopausal women improve their overall health and longevity, it is something I always have to talk about. I love what I do and helping women discover simple changes that get them results, but I hate the focus on weight.
Women sign up for my programs when they have had enough. They feel self conscious of the state of their body and worry about the judgement of others and even themselves. The things they have tried for weight loss don’t work anymore and there is a reason for that. To them, their figure is the problem and they come to me for a solution.
I’ll let you in on a little secret… the body fat is NOT the problem. It is simply a sign that things are going amuck inside. Fat burning has stalled, fat storage has increased, and this time it is visceral fat on the belly – which I call the “menopause middle.”
Menopause changes the rules and it is very important to get in there early and adapt to the changes, to slow aging, decline and deter diseases from developing.
We don’t usually seek help TODAY for something that may occur with our health in 5-20 years, but we MIGHT get help for the 20 pounds we’ve gained since menopause. The 20 pounds are a sign that health issues are coming! It’s the red flag warning. The red lights are flashing! 🆘 🚨 ⚠️
By addressing the root problem (which I do!) with foods you were designed to eat, moving and lifestyle changes in harmony with your hormones, you may just kill all the birds with one stone. The belly fat will come off as your body functions get back in alignment, setting you up for a healthier and enjoyable Second Half of Life.

Growing up in Oregon, I was lucky to have rivers, lakes, mountains and beaches all within an hour of my home. You may have limited options, but the goal is to escape the urban environment and head towards nature in its natural form.
Spending time in nature is good for our mind, body and spirit because it reconnects us to our primal selves who lived and thrived outdoors.
